WebBoughton Monchelsea Place, near Maidstone, Kent ME17 4BU, was at one time the residence of Sir Francis Barnham. The recorded history of Boughton Monchelsea begins before the Norman Conquest. It was then called Boltone, later Bacton, meaning a clearing in a beech wood. Before the Conquest, it belonged to the Saxon Earl Godwin. A fortified manor house was built on the site in the 1340s by Robert Corbie. Through the marriage of his grand daughter Joan to Nicholas Wotton, Lord Mayor of London in 1415 and 1430, the house became the property of the Wotton family.
